1860 $5 Clark, Gruber & Co. Half Eagle PCGS MS60. The respected private minter of Clark, Gruber & Company struck the four major denominations of gold coins in both 1860 and 1861, imitating corresponding Federal types except for the volcanic Pikes Peak motif on the 1860 ten and twenty dollar pieces. Like all of the smaller denomination Clark, Gruber gold coins, excluding the rare off-metal die trials, the 1860 half eagle is scarce but collectible. As always, the centers are somewhat softly impressed but the remainder of the design is sharp. The tan-gold surfaces retain ample luster and are unmarked, and show a variant of color between the obverse and reverse sides.
