1909-S $5 Indian PCGS MS64. Over the past few decades, we’ve had Choice (63) to Gem (65) Want Lists for the 1909 San Francisco mint Indian half eagle. What we’ve found is this coin is incredibly hard to find in any grade above MS61. So when we were offered this very pleasing specimen at the most recent Houston Coin Show (remember, Texas coin companies get taxed on inventory at the end of the year = sell, sell, sell) we jumped on it. Even Heritage exclaimed about another MS64 in a most recent catalog description “…The present coin is among the finest examples of the date that we have handled since 2011, when a Premium Gem PCGS coin realized in excess of $100,000. This is the first NGC-graded MS64 coin we have handled since 2002.” (By the way, this NGC MS64 coin sold by Heritage in September 2016 brought $35,265). In our opinion, if and when a nice example is offered for sale, it’s generally within the range of $20-$25,000. We bought this right so we’re interested in placing this into a prominent collection at a great price.
PCGS published price is $24,500. Population is 22 coins with 6 finer. Original mintage is a mere 297,200 coins of which a total of 597 have been certified (the 1909-O has 683). These coins remain predominantly in AU55-58 condition (250+) and MS62 (101) coins.
