1878 $20 Doubled Die Reverse MS61 PCGS with CAC endorsement. Breen-7270. The first year in the Type III sub-type to be recognized with a Double Die Reverse. As consistent with the design, we note TWENTY DOLLARS and portions of E PLURIBUS UNUM are nicely die doubled. Other reverse legends are also doubled but with a lesser spread. The present example is a sharply struck and lustrous khaki-gold double eagle with a number of small marks that correspond to the grade. Only 28 coins have been endorsed by CAC in MS61, but these include the non-doubled die varieties. According to recent research, only 26 coins have been graded with a Double Die Reverse IN ALL GRADES, out of over 1,700 coins graded in total for the date! 1878 is a year of many firsts.
