(Struck circa 1831-1834) gold $1 C. Bechtler Dollar, 30G variety, Rarity-4, PCGS AU53. The absolute first gold dollar struck in our nation’s history! Although not mandated by Congress until 1849, the enterprising jeweler and gunsmith Christopher Bechtler, a German immigrant, had the foresight to create a small more manageable gold dollar denomination from the gold pulled out of the hills of Rutherfordton County, North Carolina. There were several different gold dollars designs produced and circulated within the subsequent years, but the “30 grain” was the first, struck circa 1831 and 1832.
The present example displays that wonderful warm, harvest orange toning that occurs over time with many of these examples.
